Passaic County Group Protests Outside Courthouse On Mother's Day PATERSON, N.J. -- Strengthen Our Sisters will hold its seventh annual Special Mother's Day Demonstration in front of the Passaic County Courthouse on Friday, May 6. SOS operates women's shelters in northern New Jersey. The demonstration will consist of mothers and their supporters marching with empty baby carriages to protest what SOS members see as a trend in court rulings to award custody to batterers and child molesters. Zola M. (Allen) Giovio, 87, Former Longtime Dumont Resident DUMONT, N.J. -- Zola M. (Allen) Giovio -- a Toms River resident, formerly of Dumont -- died on Monday, May 2. She was 87. Raised in Closter, Giovio lived most of her life in Dumont. She spent her later years with her daughter and son-in-law in the Lavallette-Toms River area of Ocean County. "Zola will always be remembered as being a sweet, fun, exceedingly generous and kind person, and for her love of playing Bingo," information from the funeral home noted. Jesus B. DeJesus, 94, Bergenfield Resident BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Jesus B. DeJesus, of Bergenfield, died on Monday, May 2. He was 94. Born in the Philippines, DeJesus was an Army veteran of World War II. He was an accountant at the Tabacalera. He is survived by his wife, Luisa; children Mario, Victor, Lutgarda, Merle, Victoria and Socorro; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. DeJesus was predeceased by his son, Erasmo, and his parents, Petra and Eugenio. To encourage their peers to read, third-graders challenged the second- and fourth-graders to a read-a-thon. The students received pledges of $1 for every 10 minutes of reading. Holy Angels Dancers Complete NYU Dance Program DEMAREST, N.J. -- Demarest's Academy of the Holy Angels had multiple dancers complete NYU's "Future Dancers and Dancemakers" program, including Melina Tidwell.The program, at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, was highly selective. Tidwell was one of approximately 25 high school students from across the country, after an audition process last December. The 14-week program culminated in a Showcase Performance on Saturday, April 30.

Norwood PTO Spring Social Arrives May 6 NORWOOD, N.J. -- The Norwood PTO's annual Spring Social is coming up, on Friday, May 6.There are different times for different grades: K through second grade: 4-5 p.m. -- adult chaperone required third and fourth grades: 5:30-7 p.m. fifth through seventh grades: 7:30-9 p.m. No children will be allowed to attend another age group's party and the children must attend NPS.
